How to we monitor and report on what the search engines are doing with your site? Well, we check all the key search engines every month to ensure that

• we check that your site is on that search engine's data base. If say Alta Vista has not get your  site on its data base, then nobody using Alta Vista can find your site - no matter how well listed it may be with Yahoo or Google
• sites can drop off a search engine for no apparent reason, therefore constant checking is required on all the engines
• we check your site against agreed keywords to ensure that it is well positioned. For example if you wanted to find a hotel in Cornwall you may try "Cornwall hotel" in a search engine, therefore it is essential that a hotel in Cornwall with a web site will come up in the first 30 of the hundreds of thousands of references that any seach engine will find to march the query.
• the choice of keywords is important as the site will be written with a bias towards those words. I know a hotel in London whose site designers manages to leave out the words "London" and "hotel" on the front page. Unfortunately web sites are read by indexing search engine robots, as well as people. Therefore a fair amount of emphasis needs to be paid to the needs of the robots.
• your keywords need to be something that you would realistically expect  users to input into a search engine. In my example of the Cornish hotel, it would be unrealistic for it to expect to be well placed in say "British hotels" as well as "Cornwall hotels". Further it is probably more important to feature well against   "Cornwall hotel" queries, than against "British hotels" queries
• we will e-mail you each month your web site traffic figures that tell you where users found your site
• we will re-submit to any search engines that you are weak in
• bear in mind that search engines cannot be bought, and their work load may mean that changes take some time to get through their system. Though is you wish to spend money, you can place adverts on search engines to boost your traffic
